On an adventurous weekend, took the plunge out to somewhere many locals wouldn't... Harlem. At least this was in broad daylight - and I didn't feel in any danger. Although the streets did feel a little empty, the area felt quite "open". The weather did give it some extra feel (the type where it feels like it wants to rain but doesn't).

Amy Ruth's |
Having strolled around aimlessly (well wasn't aimless - tried to find the apollo theatre but failed), wandered into a local joint called Amy Ruth's. It was listed as the authentic soul food of new york, how could I resist trying soul food while in soul country.
Not sure what type of bread this is... but it was nice. Sweet, kind of like a sponge cake but more crumbly. Felt like starting with a dessert!

Jamaican Jerky Chicken |
Upon asking the waitress what this jerky chicken was... she returned with a perplexed look questioning what do you mean what is "chicken"?? After some minutes and continuing to appear stupid... jerky was just a "sauce". Spicy sauce as a matter of fact...
In the end, essentially it was a bbq chicken with the choice of white or dark meat. Again, love the choices you get to have!! And in addition, choice of over 10 sides to accompany the main! Not sure why, but I ended up picking potato salad and potato fries =P
And this is what authentic soul food is meant to be... bbq'd or fried chicken!! =)
I did see something else that pretty much everyone else ordered... which I must return to try. Deep fried chicken over waffles with maple syrup...??? Stay tuned till then
