Finally got the chance to sample some decent japanese... and no better way than to try a recommended place called gari. What I didn't know was that it was a one star michelin 2011. With another hot and humid day outside, it was definitely refreshing to be inside a small cooled sushi bar. Even better was that most of the guests all spoke japanese - hopefully a sign of good things. Gari is known for its modern twist of sushi and not what purists would like, but this was definitely something to try.

Sushi of Gari 46 |
Although I didn't get to sit down at the bar, the table sitting was relatively comfortable and relaxing.

Lotus Root Egg Omelette, Chicken and Sesame, Cognac Bonito Flake |
Started off with a small dish of lotus root egg omelette, chicken and sesame, and cognac bonito flake. The lotus omelette was definitely something different. Probably a little too little of a bite size portion. The cognac bonito flake had a different feel, not what I expected and my least favourite dish.

Cod Fish, Snapper and Tuna |
First set of sushi consisting of cod fish, something I can't remember the name of, snapper and tuna.

Snow Crab, Snapper, Tuna and Salmon |
Snow crab, snapper, tuna and salmon.
|
Baked Oyster |
Baked oyster that was a lot better than expected. It was quite oily, but with the oyster already taken out of its shell and cut into pieces, this was definitely tasty.
|
Hot Green Tea |
Some hot green tea in their gari mug served before dessert. Quite interesting drawings depicting all the different generations of gari.

Mochi Ice Cream of Vanilla, Green Tea and Strawberry |
Dessert to end it off with mochi ice cream of vanilla, green tea and strawberry. Interestingly it was the green tea that did the best, where the ice cream was still nice and cold with the slightly chewy mochi. The others started to melt and was hard to grab...
Definitely a great place of modern twist sushi. Great flavours and presentation, with some interesting combinations of flavours. A place worth going to for sure, but a little on the pricey side. Some little things that finish it off is that each of the sushi pieces come with wasabi and soy sauce pre-applied for you. That means no messy soy sauce dipping. And everything is perfectly bite size. =)
